Wi-fi Exeter temp approach
update Sept20th 05

Not much happening at the moment in 'wi-fi Exeter' so here is a comment on Psand adventures over the summer that is now coming to an end.

People from Psand have been quite close to Exeter this year. Their approach has been a constant inspiration.

Unfortunately the latest experience has been difficult. The Thames Festival was to have been a kind of finale for the season of open air music. There could have been a weblink from Nice. Southwark Council invited the use of open space next to the Tate Modern. There probably are people within the Tate who understand the potential of the internet to contribute to art and communication. However due to administrative problems it was not possible either to park the satellite van anywhere near the event or to log on to the Tate wireless network though this showed up with an adequate signal. A 3g phone was tried but this did not work either.

At various sites around Europe, see Psand site for more detail, internet through satellite has contibuted to cultural and social events. A site such as the South Bank could interest many more people. Still, this will have to wait for next year.

In Exeter, the Phoenix has started to offer web access as part of membership of the Media Centre. There may be demand for wi-fi by next summer. Links will be tried to digital animation online.

So experiments continue. Let us imagine an even more modern Tate, somewhere between St Ives and Southwark. With enough communication there could be support for a better Thames Festival next year. Alternatively maybe all the talk of instant networks is a bit off the point. Why not forget festivals and wait for the DVD at home?
