Update Dec 29th. Reader 7 released late December. More detail follows in Jan.
Definitely worth a download. Loads faster, includes Yahoo search, includes
collaboration features for PDF created with Acrobat 7. Previously this required the Reader Extensions server software. More details in the book and website from Ted Padova.

Software

Acrobat is software to handle Portable Document Files. PDF is somewhere between paper and a computer screen. John Warnock has described it both as 'an extensible form of paper' and 'a hypermedia that is device independent, platform independent, and color consistent.' more in this pdf

To read PDF files you need at least the Reader which is free. Download from the Adobe UK site. With the new Acrobat 6, the Reader is called the Adobe Reader. It is worth downloading as it supports new multimedia features such as slideshows created in Photoshop Album. Eventually there will be support for the 'Reader extensions' that add functions to the Reader for specific PDF files when viewed online.

The full Acrobat software can create and edit a PDF file and add links and bookmarks. If you already have Microsoft Office an icon will appear to create PDF from any document.

Distiller creates PDF from any Postscript file.

Catalog creates indexes which can be searched in exchange or with the Search version of the Reader.

Capture creates Acrobat files from scanning hard copy. Unfortunately the low volume version was not included with Acrobat 5 but it can be downloaded from Adobe.com. Capture is sold in various versions for larger volumes. See below.

Alternatives to Acrobat

If you can't afford the full Acrobat software there are other options which offer some of the same functions.

For Windows, look at an option from Fineprint- http://www.fineprint.com
For Mac try http://www,jwwwalker.com/pages/pdf.html

Jaws PDF Creator

Suitable for creating PDF ready for printing. Global Graphics also supply Postscript software for image setting in the print industry.

IT Professionals

If you work in an organisation with a volume of documents there is software available for PDF creation. Server versions of Distiller can work over a network. Capture can also work with a number of scanners to speed up the transition from hard copy. If your organisation needs more than 1000 seats for simple PDF creation, Acrobat Elements may be relevant. Other options are available and start price discounting on lower volumes.

Training

Acrobat Services have developed training materials which are sometimes based on sales support materials such as this site. They are public domain though a charge is made when used as part of a training project that takes time for support.
