Introduction 29th Oct 2005 (still much as June 2004) This site looks at uses for Acrobat and PDF in the social economy. It started with examples of PDF to download. There have been grant proposals for work with databases and collaboration. Wi-fi and satellite have been considered as part of getting access to broadband, assumed by new developments in PDF. The proposals became related to eTEN but are not formal. It seems possible something like what can be imagined will actually happen over the next two years. Psand have made a lot of progess over the last three years. They may not get wi-fi across the strait of Gibraltar next week but their site has much information on previous events that worked. PDF is now established for pre-press and for online documents. The future includes forms, data and collaboration. It became clear at Seybold Amsterdam that although Adobe server software is expensive, there are open source alternatives, both for PDF and for XML forms. The scope of the 'social economy' is changed by this. The 'collaboration' as part of the social economy is also interesting for mainstream IT. The Microsoft documentation on WebDAV has been a top download so far. So the scope of this site is quite wide. Open source versions develop as well so this may be more relevant for the social economy and co-ops. A range of people attend meetings of the Acrobat User Forum, where similar issues are discussed. Suggest this site is treated with critique so you can take what is useful from it. |
