The Book as Child of the Internet

Date/Time: 11 Apr 2006

11:40-12:25

Speaker: Mr Frank Cost

College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology

Professor, Co-Director, Printing Industry Center

Seminar Details

A New Generation of nearly fully-automated book production factories is arising to provide the Internet generation with a wonderful array of new book publishing opportunities. These factories produce books that are indistinguishable from those produced by traditional methods, with one very significant difference: They can produce runs as small as a single book—profitably. Coupled with powerful Internet-based software, these factories are transforming the book from a medium accessible exclusively to a small number of wealthy players into a medium that can be used by anyone with a computer and an Internet connection. This presentation will reveal the secrets of how this new paradigm of book publishing actually works.

Possible paper for conference on Knowledge Economy

http://www.lancs.ac.uk/ias/annualprogramme/kbe/2005-06.htm

Now submitted . See here

could end up as an article

will stay as journalism till July

"The Learning Company - Now With Quality Assurance"

The Learning Company is a possible theme. Organisation workshop not till July

This would be another attempt to present quality theory as related to ideas about learning and organisation. Website , "learning with ISO 9000" for previous

http://www.learn9.net

Aim to have an actual workshop, get discussion on actual Deming and possible use as a basis for some form of quality assurance that academics could support

sections of the paper on

British Origins of Anti-Performivity

there is something about the 'critique' thread that connects back to an older base in UK academic opposed to 'vocational', engineering, management etc.

I am now working on swickis like the world cup one at the bottom. there is one for 'anti-performativity

Knowledge Pull

Worth exploring some meanings for 'knowledge'. At the workshop on education I defended Wikipedia as accurate more often than not. Also suggested Google is more of a threat to libraries than the WTO.

Previous article mostly about Stanford, includes 'knowledge push and pull'

Paper covers

'learning organisation' as promoted in the UK

compare Senge, links to Deming

Japan "knowledge creating company" Nonaka /Takeuchi

Information, Systems and Information Systems Checkland / Holwell

( my impression is that 'management science' and 'learning/leadership' rarely meet up in Lancaster ; maybe someone from systems will be at a 'knowledge economy' event )

Mutual Causality in Buddhism and General Systems Theory
Joanna Macy SUNY

could connect with western take on Buddhism

article for IP3 Today and/or Quality World

Trying to link ideas about print publishing and quality documents

Start with pre-press. Moving procedures to the people who create on desktop, PDF and JDF. Complex set of responsibilities. Publisher chooses suppliers but need training and supervision on origination.

Adobe LiveCycle is mostly about documents and records. Quality theory relates.

Step One

Establish viable workflows for print and publishing

the web is the platform for print. Copy to PDF. JDF for admin etc.

Step Two

Look at communications around organisations, print and web etc.

Getting past step one establishes the web as base.

In June and July OhmyNews will feature the World Cup. I don't know much about football but have written a couple of stories about News International getting at Sven. They seem to see it as patriotic to upset the manager. I am trying to work out if the are actually supporting some team other than England. Maybe Australia but there is not much chance of them getting all that far. There seems to be little interest in soccer within the USA. Maybe there are people watching Foxsprts who support Mexica, Brazil or Argentina. Maybe some other terms will pop up. The Swicki starts on June 10th.
